AT&T Natural Voices can be a good resource to determine pronunciation of names by various voices. I tested the family surname VIA - VIAR. I was suprised that every one of the native English speakers pronounced it the same way, just as my family had done long ago. Give it a try: AT&T Natural Voices.

Edna, I was searching my family history and I came across a name William M. Viar (borned Mar 1857) and lived in Lovington, Nelson County, Virginia. He fathered 9 kids with a Sallie Robenson or Robinson. Sallie Robenson was my great-great grandmother. I was trying to found out where did the surname Viar origin from what country. I know the name is not American, and after reading your blog, I see it came from France. If you should locate any more information about the Viar surname, please contact me by email.
